From Dry Ground to Abundant Flow: How Kanyangi Ward is Winning the Water War!
For far too long, Kanyangi Ward in Kitui County was caught in a cycle of water scarcity. The terrain was dry, the boreholes were few, and the burden of fetching water fell heavily on women and children. But over the past few years, something extraordinary has been happening—a water revolution, powered by leadership, community collaboration, and smart partnerships.
Under the unwavering advocacy of Hon. Boniface Katula and the progressive vision of Governor Dr. Julius Makau Malombe, the Kitui County Ministry of Water has delivered a series of transformative projects that are rewriting Kanyangi’s water story.
💧 BUILDING A NEW FUTURE: WATER INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
In the heart of the ward, critical infrastructure is rising where only dry soil once lay. The Ministry of Water has rolled out over 10 new sand dams—a smart, sustainable method to harvest water in arid zones. Among them:
Kwa Kaleve (Kavoo), Kwa Ngungu, Kwa Beatrice, Kwa Mbiku, Kwa Ndume, Mumbe, Kwa Rose, and Kanyoleni have all seen new sand dams built, each one turning dry riverbeds into seasonal reservoirs.
In Matiliku (Kanyangi Village), an earth dam now captures precious runoff.
Kalivuku (Kiseuni Village) is now home to a thriving irrigation cluster, complete with a sump well, two 10,000-litre tanks, and a pipeline network serving 11 local farmers.
🛠️ FIXING THE FORGOTTEN: REHABILITATION & REPAIRS
Not all progress comes from new builds—some of it comes from breathing life into the old. Key repairs and rehabilitation efforts have restored functionality to several existing water sources:
The Old Kanyangi Borehole received new solar panels and underwent full repair.
In Nzambia Village, four shallow wells (Kwa Kinyili, Kwa Nthiku, Kwa Masisya, and Kwa Maundu) were revived, bringing clean water back to dozens of households.
🚰 CONNECTING COMMUNITIES: PIPELINE EXTENSIONS
Kanyangi’s water isn’t just being created—it’s being strategically distributed. Pipeline extensions have connected vital public institutions and homes, including:
Nzambia Market to Nzambia Dispensary
Kwa Mwatu Kiosk to Kwa Nzwii to Kwa Mary (Kanyongonyo)
Kwa Mwatu Kiosk to Kwa Kamula (Kanyongonyo)
This ensures water access isn't just a privilege for a few, but a right for many.
🌞 SOLAR POWERED, NGO-DRIVEN PROJECTS: LOBBIED & DELIVERED
Thanks to Hon. Katula’s relentless lobbying, key partnerships with NGOs have brought major development boosts to Kanyangi. Organizations like World Vision, JICA, and the World Bank have joined forces with the County Government to deliver powerful results:
☀️ Solarization Projects
Kavoo Borehole (JICA + County)
Kanyongonyo Borehole (World Vision + County)
📈 Pipeline Extensions & Upgrades
- Kavoo to Mandogoi Schools
- Kanyangi-Kilisa-Nzambia Line, boosting access to schools and health centers
- Kwa Mwatu Kiosk to Kiunduani Primary, complete with a 10,000L tank
- Borehole to Kanyongonyo Market, now upgraded for better flow
🚰 Water Kiosks & Storage Tanks
- New kiosks at Old Kanyangi Borehole, Iviani Borehole, and Kiunduani Market
- Elevated storage with 2×10,000L tanks at Kanyongonyo Borehole
💪 Boosted Capacity
A more powerful pump installed at Kanyongonyo Borehole now means fewer outages and faster filling times.
🏗️ Collaborative Construction
A major sand dam at Kwa Mumo (Kitooni), built in partnership with the World Bank, is helping secure long-term water storage on the Kituu stream.
🚀 A TRUE WARD-LEVEL WATER TRANSFORMATION
Let’s put it plainly: Kanyangi Ward has experienced more water-related development in three years than in the past three decades. With a blend of county-funded projects and NGO-backed interventions, the results speak for themselves:
✅ Over 10 new sand dams
✅ Multiple boreholes equipped and solarized
✅ Shallow wells rehabilitated
✅ Pipelines extended to markets, schools, and health centers
✅ Water kiosks and tanks installed in key areas
🏁 THE ROAD AHEAD
This is more than a story of boreholes and pipelines. It’s about dignity, development, and determination. Under the stewardship of Hon. Katula and Governor Dr. Malombe, Kanyangi is no longer begging for water—it’s building its future around it.
And the best part? This is just the beginning!
